Hamilton Pratt
Hamilton Pratt is a specialist franchise law firm providing leading edge legal advice to the franchise sector. The firm was established in 2004 by John Pratt who had been managing partner of Pinsent Masons, a top 15 UK law firm, but who believed that a more focused and cost effective approach to advising those involved in franchising was required than could be offered by a law firm that did not specialise in this area.

Although the majority of the firm's work is advising franchisors, the firm also provides advice to prospective franchisees and franchisees who have encountered difficulties with their franchise. Hamilton Pratt represents franchisees where difficult questions of law arise or where there has been "bad behaviour" from their franchisor. We are based in modern premises on a business park in Warwick half a mile from Junction 15 of the M40 with ample parking.

Our offices are approximately an hour and a half away from London Heathrow. Our Franchise Law Blog contains more information about the firm and recent developments in the franchise sector.
Services
Hamilton Pratt is different to other law firms.
We provide leading edge advice - we have been involved in many of the leading franchise cases over the last ten years - at a realistic cost.
We will establish a cost estimate at the outset of an assignment so that you know before you commit what your cost exposure will be.
We build a very close bond with all clients.
Most of our franchisor clients were clients of the firm even before they launched their franchise and they know that they are able to access our expertise on a continuing and cost effective basis.
Our clients range from the very largest multinational companies who are household names, to small businesses, those who have been established in franchising for decades and those who are new to it, businesses who have never franchised and want to expand overseas or experienced franchisors that want to take their franchise abroad, franchisees, franchisee associations or franchisors.
Hamilton Pratt acts for more franchisors than any other law firm in the United Kingdom.
It represents just under 40% of the full members of the British Franchise Association - the largest and most established franchisors in the UK.
Our franchise agreements are constantly updated because we monitor legal developments relevant to franchising as and when they happen.
Our franchise agreements are drafted to increase the likelihood that the terms of the agreement will be upheld and enforceable should a dispute arise.
Franchisors constantly complain that Judges seem to favour their franchisees.
Whether or not that is true, undoubtedly Judges are influenced by the "look and feel" of a franchise agreement.
Historically, for very good commercial reasons, franchise agreements have placed great emphasis on imposing very substantial obligations and restrictions on franchisees.

Who Would be a Franchisor? - (This article is based on the key note speech given by John Pratt at the Hardwicke Annual Franchise Conference).
What's the difference between investing in a licence to operate on a company's behalf and a business format franchise?.
If a franchise agreement is non negotiable, why do I need a lawyer to review the document before I sign on the dotted line?.
What percentage of the total franchise investment must a franchisee have in available funds?.
Under what circumstances would a franchisor reduce the size of a franchisee's trading territory?.
Should I be wary of a franchisor offering a discount on the initial investment if I agree to become a franchisee within a certain time frame?.
