Costs Lawyer Standards Board
We set the professional standards that Costs Lawyers must meet and we can take action where a Costs Lawyer's conduct falls below those standards. Costs Lawyers are qualified experts in legal costs. They can advise clients on issues like litigation costs, the cost of legal services (such as solicitors' or barristers' fees), and legal aid costs. The CLSB works closely with ACL, but we are different organisations.

ACL's main role is to promote the interests of Costs Lawyers, while the CLSB's main role is to protect the public interest.
Services
If you're not satisfied with any aspect of the service you have received from your Costs Lawyer, the first thing to do is raise the matter with the Costs Lawyer involved, or with the firm in which they work.
In many cases, an issue can be resolved by talking things through and agreeing a way forward.
Sometimes informal resolution will not solve the problem and you might want to make a more formal complaint.
All Costs Lawyers are required to have effective procedures in place for the resolution of complaints.
We aim to ensure that everyone who contacts us receives a prompt response and is treated fairly.
If you would like to give us feedback about the service we provide, please get in touch using the Contact page of our website.
If you would like to make a complaint about our service, please use the Contact page of our website or tell the person you have been dealing with that you want to make a complaint.
We will always attempt to resolve your complaint informally in the first instance, by talking things through and looking for a solution.
This section of the website contains various resources designed to assist you in your practice as a Costs Lawyer.
In the Costs Lawyer Handbook, you will find the regulatory rules that apply to all Costs Lawyers, along with guidance to help you deal with specific issues.
There are also pages dedicated to continuing professional development (CPD) and renewing your practising certificate, where you will find answers to common questions and additional materials.
If you can't find the answers your looking for, you can Contact us for further assistance.
The Costs Lawyer Handbook contains the core regulatory rules that apply to all Costs Lawyers.
If you are new to the Costs Lawyer Handbook, we suggest you start by looking at the Costs Lawyer Code of Conduct, which establishes the principles of professional conduct by which Costs Lawyers must abide.
There are additional CLSB rules that are not contained in the Costs Lawyer Handbook, because they are only relevant in certain situations and do not apply to everyone.
These include the Training Rules, the Accredited Costs Lawyer Rules and the Recognition of European Professional Qualification Rules.
You still need to obtain 12 CPD points per year, and you must plan and evaluate your CPD.
You need to take action now, at the start of the CPD year, to ensure you comply with the new CPD Rules.
Costs Lawyers must ensure that their expertise remains relevant and current throughout their professional careers.
One way of achieving this is to carry out continuing professional development, or CPD.
The term CPD refers to the learning activities that a practitioner engages in following entry into the profession.
